By far my favorite gardening book for winter reading. It is written in old style English but you very quickly become accustomed to that and soon realize that the writer gardens from the heart. Reading this in the winter will take you right into the garden with Mrs. Thaxter's descriptive writing. You can almost smell the soil and watch the seeds germinate.This edition has reprinted the lovely paintings from the original illustrations. Another treat.
This edition is currently out of print, I look for it in resale shops and have been lucky enough to find it at very reasonable prices in like new condition for gifting fellow gardeners.
A wonderful book for those who garden from their soul.

The images are by Childe Hassam. The garden was on an island in the Isles of Shoals off New Hampshire, which I've visited many times. Originals of this book are very expensive, so this edition is nice to have.
I was hoping for more pictures but the story of Celia Theater is a good one.
Quite unique - it is a gift for a friend who loves all things gardening.
I love how she explains things as she writes, talking to her flowers, describing each little flower's personality. I especially love how she describes the ocean waves as they break on the shore. It is like you are there with her and living every little detail. Fascinating book, I read it over many times because I just want to " live " there in my dreams.
Reproduction of a classic in gardening history. A beautifully printed hardback with a hard slip cover.
Copy was fine but I had expected the drawings that were in the original that I had seen.
best garden book of a place and in a certain time ... ever! Worth owning! Worth reading. And if you are lucky ... worth going to that island in the Isle of Shoals, NH
