Rick Hermann’s Nooksack: Poems and Prose, is the written expression of that which is eternally abiding—life and death, growth and decay, love and grace. Rick’s words are a delicate dance on the edge of the infinite and the immediate. At times, he dips a heavy pen into the great, dark depths of language and human existence; at other times, his words dance lightly at the tip of a feather quill. His simple words convey the rich abundance of the of the mother (Nooksack) who holds us always but especially when we cannot hold ourselves. And yet, this little gem of a book is not weighed down by the heaviness of such matters as life and death. Rather, it is buoyed up by humor and breath, encouraging the reader not to take things too seriously—especially herself. In Nooksack, life is a celebratory choice and a benevolent one because compassion needs us / beauty needs us / love needs us” (“Night Airs,” p.10).Product details

Nooksack Poems and Prose Rick Hermann 9780985807429 Books Reviews
I'll start by saying I don't read a lot of poetry. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this quirky collection and would like to read more of Hermann's work after reading Nooksack. Cheeky and clever, yet highly insightful at the same time, it kept me turning the page to see what I would be reading about next. I'll definitely be reading it over again.
When I first took this book out of its wrappings I was curious about the name, the cover art, and the welcome calm I experienced as I held this tiny volume in my hands. We all need this time with Hermann's writing--a voice that wraps us in rich imagery, a rhythm that slows the heart rate, provocative observations, humor, and a willingness to share insights and reflections that help us access our own tangled thoughts.
This little book of poetry drew me in from the first few pages. The diversity of topics and moods reflect life - from gratitude, to nature, from death to whimsy. The natural and terrible order of the eagle capturing the spent salmon is assuaged by the soaring eagle spreading the salmon's seed. The self-reflective question "why am I here", is answered with the enigmatic "love needs us, not the other way around" - stimulus for further reflection. But it's not all seriousness. Deep thoughts and topics are relieved by the playfulness and wry sense of humor that creeps in to poems such as what it's like to live as an ant.
I found myself staying up much later than I had planned, reading still another poem, and then another.
I've just spent a lovely two weeks with Rick Hermann's "Nooksack". I would have posted a review earlier but was delayed because I wanted to read it again as soon as I finished. This book of poetry and very short nonfiction [or prose poems] begins with an ode to the river which gives the book its name. After artfully describing "the flood of the spring melt," and the way the river comes "cold off the glacier . . . flashing eyes at night, seamless, cool, / urgent" he concludes
There are reasons
to live, she tells me.
Good reasons
to stay alive.
So he had me at page one. From there I read on, finding many "reasons to stay alive." These included numerous moments of a kind of poetic mindfulness as Hermann asks to think of December as an opportunity to be "engulfed in dark rains / to discover Earth's / still point," to consider what moments in our lives may be thought of as "practice" for dying, and to join him in a celebration and rethinking of the ordinary phenomena that surround us, including rain, fences, windows and geese that sleep "motionless as cabbages" and who fly in a V formation as if to provide "a herbal of some distant victory, or the inverted direction to heaven."
